Proper storage is vital if you want to preserve the flavor and bubbles in your bottle of Champagne. This beverage tastes best when chilled in the refrigerator for 4 hours, then served in a bucket of ice to retain the coldness.

But what if you purchase your Champagne weeks or months before your special event? In that case, you need to find a dark, cool, preferably humid place where your Champagne can rest in peace until it’s time to chill.

A wine rack in a climate-controlled cellar is the perfect environment for Champagne storage. Most of us aren’t fortunate enough to have a dedicated wine cellar, though. Luckily, Champagne seems to store just fine in the bottom of a dark, out-of-the-way closet or cabinet where it will not be disturbed.

Basically, you want to protect the bottle from heat and movement. Too much of either can change the flavor of the Champagne, and not in a good way. Sloshing around can also decrease the bubbles in the drink. If you jar the bottle just prior to opening, the cork could fly out violently and much of the Champagne could be lost to spillage. Keep the bottle as still as possible for as long as possible.

Champagne should be stored and served at the same temperature: about 45 degrees F. There is some debate about whether sparkling wine should be stored on its side like still wine, or if vertical storage is preferable. Either way seems to work, but horizontal storage takes up less space.

You’re well on your way to enjoying a great glass of Champagne. There are selections to suit every budget, so choose a flavor that appeals to you and enjoy it with friends and family – or keep it all for yourself!
