To be classed as a Vintage Champagne, the Cuvee must have a minimum blend of 85% of the grapes from the same harvest. Vintages Champagne are only produced in exceptional years and when the `cellar master` deems right. In addition to only being chosen in `best` harvest years, the grapes are usually taken from the prestige vineyards. As such, Vintage Champagnes are of much better taste and texture.
Typically, for a vintage / good Champagne harvest, the weather needs to be warm and dry – particularly close to the harvest in the autumn. History suggests that only about 5-6 harvests per decade have gone onto become a Vintage Champagne. However, more recently due to differing weather patterns this has not become so predictable.
Vintage Champagne is the ultimate in Champagne excellence, with each vintage having its own unique taste depending on the harvest and weather of the preceding year. Even Champagne grapes grown on neighbouring vineyards have a distinctive taste – all depending on the soil content. Creating Champagne is not only a fine art but there is a whole science into producing the very best Champagne.
The Champagne is also aged for longer than non-vintage Champagne, this adds to the complexity and maturity of the wine. Each Vintage Champagne has a certain time frame in which it is best to taste, so make sure you get the right time frame to get the most enjoyment your vintage Champagne.
Vintage and Prestige Champagne differ from the Non-vintage Champagne in the following subtle ways: The `Champagne Bubbles` tend to be lighter and more delicate. The fragrances / aroma and flavours are much more textured / complex and intense. The Champagne flavour is longer lasting on the palate the Non-Vintage. Finally, Vintage Champagne has much more longevity - as a rule of thumb, the Champagne reaches its best after 15 years from the vintage (harvest) date. However, each harvest and Champagne House is different and each Vintage Champagne will have their own individual `best ‘date.
